Mandy El-Sayegh: The Amateur and Problems with Metaphor

  • through February 23, 2020
  • Twin Galleries, Sursock Museum, Beirut
The practice of Malaysia-born Mandy El-Sayegh is rooted in assemblage. Executed in a wide range of media, including densely layered paintings, sculpture, installation, diagrams, as well as sound and video, El-Sayegh's works investigate the formation and breakdown of systems of order, be they bodily, linguistic or political. In this exhibition, El-Sayegh presents two new works: a video-and-audio piece "The Amateur" (2019) as well as "Problems with Metaphor" (2019), a room-sized immersive installation created on-site. On the gallery walls, El-Sayegh uses latex, layered with newspaper pages and hand mark-making.
