Saqqara: Life in a City of the Dead
This exhibit reveals the significance of religious traditions for people who lived in ancient Egypt. On display are papyri, a bronze cat sarcophagus and a facial fragment of a mummy chest. The exhibition focuses on the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden excavation project near the Egyptian village of Saqqara, where the millennium-old cemetery is carefully examined, answering who were laid to rest there, how the graves were used in daily life and by whom. Various objects from the museum’s own collection demonstrate the multifaceted use of the cemetery.
