During 2020 the world needed some superheroes. Among all the frontline workers who helped the world get through the pandemic were epidemiologists who worked like crime detectives to sift through evidence and solve medical mysteries.

Warm Up


Before students read the article or begin looking at the activities, do this warm-up to hypothesize the main idea.

15-Minute Activity


Students use the comprehension questions from the reading to answer the question, “How do we know where viruses come from?”

CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

CCRA.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

30-Minute Activity


Students play the role of disease detectives, developing their own questions and finding their answers in order to answer the question, “Where do viruses come from and how do they spread?”

Common Core Standard(s) Met:

CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

CFRA.R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas.

CCRA.W.1 Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

CCRA.W.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

CCRA.W.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

Visual Analysis


Students examine photographs from the article as primary sources, seeing what the images reveal about the time and place they were taken.

Common Core Standard(s) Met:

RI.9-10.7 Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums (e.g., a person's life story in both print and multimedia), determining which details are emphasized in each account.
