Reclaiming Identity: Dismantling Arab Stereotypes
Arab American National Museum, Dearborn, Michigan, online,Dearborn,USA;Michigan
This exhibition conveys that Arab Americans have been an integral part of US society since its inception. It shows the discrepancies between who Arab Americans are, how Arab Americans see themselves, and how they are often perceived by other demographics of the US public. These discrepancies are often results of Orientalism and stereotyping--over-generalized (and distorted) images and ideas produced by institutions, particularly media, and they are parts of a much longer history of "othering" that has been faced by other groups. These images are not harmless, and the exhibition explains the practical ranges of consequences and impacts.
