How does art affect us? How does it influence our attitudes toward the cultures artists come from and express? "Art opens us up," says the director of the Building Bridges Program, the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art's grant program. Experiences with art can make us feel closer to unfamiliar people–and that means we can get along better. But how does it really work? (Does it really work?) To find out, the author visits four of the 138 programs Building Bridges has supported to date: a children's museum, a public mural and four touring hip-hop artists.
