Disillusioned with American life after living through 9/11 as a resident of New York, she seeks refuge in her homeland of Morocco. However, Jeehan finds it impossible to forget New York. Even when she’s in Morocco, her memories of the city linger. Experiencing one setback after another along her journey back to the desert, she stumbles upon an opportunity to grow in the most unexpected of places. Although highlighting loss and trauma, Bouziane presents an optimistic story about reconnection, self-renewal, and understanding. It’s an excellent book to keep for journeys and long commutes, because every chapter can stand on its own and still work with the overall narrative. In a world marred by discontent and division, Jeehan teaches readers to find unity through their differences and create hope amid tragedy.
